The first published example of what is now called a Feynman diagram appeared in Feynman's 1949 Physical Review article [see image labeled fig 1]. It depicted the simplest contribution to an electron-electron interaction, with a single virtual photon (wavy line) emitted by one electron and then absorbed by the other. Feynman diagrams can also be used to describe the weak interactions, which are mediated by the W+, W− and Z0 bosons, rather than the photon. This is illustrated by Fig. 5, which shows the dominant contributions to the elastic scattering reaction Sign in to download full-size image FIGURE 5. Feynman Diagrams Decoded. ⇒ Feynman Diagrams are pictorial representations of the interactions of subatomic particles. ⇒ For example, this shows a Feynman Diagram of beta (β -) decay (see our notes on nuclear equations if you have not done so already): ⇒ Usually, Feynman Diagrams are read from left to right. ⇒ So, here, we can see a neutron decaying into a proton and a W - exchange particle, which subsequently decays into an electron and an electron anti-neutrino. A Feynman diagram is a two-dimensional representation in which one axis, usually the horizontal axis, is chosen to represent space, while the second (vertical) axis represents time. Straight lines are used to depict fermions —fundamental particles with half-integer values of intrinsic angular momentum ( spin ), such as electrons ( e− )—and wavy lines are used for bosons —particles with integer values of spin, such as photons (γ).

Posted on October 5, 2010 by The Physicist. Physicist: Feynman diagrams are primarily a way to keep track of what you’re doing. Physicists aren’t geniuses or anything, and they get distracted pretty easily. When you’re trying to calculate the probability of a particular particle interaction you’ll find yourself integrating over (adding up) every possible position and momentum of every involved particle.

Compute Feynman diagrams, in which divergent terms will depend on Λ. Then, define δ Z, δ m, and δ λ such that Feynman diagrams for the counterterms will exactly cancel the divergent terms in the normal Feynman diagrams when the limit is taken. In this way, meaningful finite quantities are obtained.: 323-326

Feynman diagrams the tool of choice. The American theoretical physicist Rich-ard Feynman first introduced his diagrams in the late 1940s as a bookkeeping device for simplifying lengthy calculations in one area of physics—quantum electrodynamics, or QED, the quantum-mechanical description of elec-tromagnetic forces. Soon the diagrams gained Feynman’s lines and squiggles, which became known as Feynman diagrams, have since “revolutionized nearly every aspect of theoretical physics,” wrote the historian of science David Kaiser in 2005. “In the same way that computer-enabled computation might today be said to be enabling a genomic revolution, Feynman diagrams helped to transform the way physicists saw the world, and their place in it.” The Feynman diagram representation of a process is most useful when a few relatively simple diagrams supply most of the answer. That is the regime physicists call “weak coupling,” where each Feynman relied heavily on verbal communication, such as when he used cartoonish diagrams to explain highly scientific principles.
